If your child has to miss school please let the school know, either in writing, in person or by telephone. By doing this you can ensure that your child’s absence is marked as authorised in the Register. If your child is away and no reason is given, the absence will be marked as unauthorised. ‘Unauthorised absences’ will be shown on School Reports and in addition we are required to publish the number of unauthorised absences each year to the Governors and to report them to the Department for Education so they can keep track of truancy. We therefore ask all parents to inform us of any absence and to send a letter on the child’s return to explain their absence. If your child has to leave school during the day e.g. to attend a medical appointment, then he or she must be collected from school by an appropriate adult and an entry made in the book by the office.
Pupils who are late must come through the main entrance and register at the office. If you know that your child is going to be late for registration a quick phone call to the school office would be greatly appreciated so that your child can be counted for lunch. A record is kept of children arriving late. Pupils arriving after 09:30 will have their lateness counted as an unauthorised absence as required by DfES guidelines.
There is no right to absence for a holiday in term time. A leave of absence form (obtainable from the school office) must be completed for term time absence. Any requests for absence will be considered individually and the school has the right to refuse a request if it is thought to be inappropriate. No holidays must be taken in term time.
Regular and punctual attendance at school is the shared responsibility of parents, the school and the LEA. Registers are monitored by the Local Authority. Unauthorised absences are unacceptable as they affect a child’s learning and right to education
If you would like more information, the Head Teacher will be happy to talk to you.
