At Chingford C of E Primary School our aim is for the children to gain knowledge and understanding of the past within our own locality, our country and the wider world. They will learn about the complexity of peoples’ lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups of people in the past. Through a detailed study of key knowledge from different historical periods, pupils will also develop an understanding of abstract historical terms and specific vocabulary.

Our teaching is structured to ensure that pupils have a coherent understanding of chronology, and a depth of knowledge that enables them to have a connected understanding of the individuals, periods and civilisations they study. The AREs for each of the three strands of study for history build upon each other from year to year. This allows the children to apply a wider range of historical methods and approaches as their mastery of these skills develops. As the depth of knowledge and mastery of historical skills increases, so does the richness and detail of the pupils’ internal schema. Thus, the connections that the children make at each stage of their learning become stronger and further embedded.

We are dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to current and historical figures from the past. We endeavour to make links with the local community in order to enhance the learning for our pupils.

At Chingford C of E we try to incorporate a variety of educational visits to support our units of work. These visits are usually of a cross curricular nature to support the learning of children across the broad and balanced curriculum.
