  • Cultural day

    Wed 07 Feb 2024

We  hosted our annual ‘Cultural Day’ on Wednesday 7th February. On this special day, children took part in a range of activities that enabled them to embrace their own heritage and learn about a range of alternative cultures.

The day was  a non-uniform day as the children were encouraged to wear any traditional clothes that they had at home to represent their family heritage. This year, we  combined our ‘Cultural day’ with ‘World read aloud day’ so we also encouraged children to bring in a cultural book to share with their class.

A highlight of our ‘Cultural day’ over the last few years has been having our fabulous parent/carer volunteers in to read or present something about their heritage to their child’s class. This year, we  extended their involvement even further. Thank you to all the parents/carers who came to school and read stories, taught a traditional dance, gave a  presentation,  demonstrated traditional cooking/taste testing, art or language teaching. You were wonderful! The children learnt so much and had a really informative day!

  • Rights Respecting councillors visit the Town hall!

    Fri 26 Jan 2024

On Friday the 26th of January 18 RRS school councillors got the opportunity to go to our local Town hall and visit the Mayor of Waltham Forest , Roy Berg . Once they arrived they were accompanied by Lauren, the Mayor’s assistant who escorted them to the chamber where they met the Mayor. After the lovely chat with Mayor Berg the RRS councillors asked a few questions about what is involved in being the Mayor.  We also found out that the Mayors charity this year is to raise awareness of ex-servicemen and what the community can do to help them.

Emma said ’I enjoyed the trip as it was very interesting and the people were lovely.  My favourite bit was meeting the Mayor.’ Zhion liked finding out that the Mayor has his own office and a personal rest room!

The Mayor also told the councillors that he is very proud of being an ex Chingford CofE pupil! Who knows.....in the future one of these councillors might follow in Roy's footsteps!

  • Y1 visited the Transport Museum in Covent Garden!

    Fri 19 Jan 2024

London Transport Museum is one of the main visitor attractions in Covent Garden Piazza. Bringing to life the history of London’s public transport network — its buses, trains, tubes and taxis, from the 19th century to the present day, the Museum appeals to young people and adults alike. Our Y1 classes had a lovely time exploring the museum. With an emphasis on interactivity, the exhibits range from impressive historic vehicles to striking examples of the transport network’s famous poster art and graphic design.

Transport has played a defining role in the evolution of London’s unique identity. From the days of sedan chairs and horse-drawn omnibuses through to the world’s first underground railway and the creation of iconic designs such as the roundel and Tube map, the Museum’s colourful displays offer fascinating insights into how London works.

The lively exhibitions explore over 200 years of history and reveal compelling stories about the influence transport has on London’s society and culture, and how our travel experiences might change in the future. At the heart of the story are the people that have kept London moving over the centuries – Victorian pioneers, the avant-garde designers of the early 20th century and the many thousands of transport workers, including those recruited from overseas during the 1950s and 1960s.

The children must be commended for their excellent behaviour on the trip.

  • Award winning poet Karl Nova visits school!

    Wed 10 Jan 2024

On Wednesday, selected Y4 pupils joined Y4 pupils from neighbouring schools for an Aim High day with Karl Nova. Karl Nova is a hip hop artist, performance poet and award-winning author who also works as an educator running hip-hop flavoured creative writing workshops in schools all over the UK and abroad. His debut collection of poetry and short stories, Rhythm And Poetry, won the 2018 CLiPPA Poetry Award, which was presented to him at the National Theatre, London by Grace Nichols. The book has been a hit with children as young as seven all the way up into adolescence.

Karl focuses on questioning the narrow definitions of what poetry is, as well as the discovery of the joy of poetic expression which came to him through the lyricism of rap music and the creativity found in spoken word slam poetry. He deals with growing up through childhood into adulthood and is often very humorous in his storytelling and reflections. Matylda in Y4 said, “It was a brilliant day!”

  • Y5 presentation about the conflict in Gaza

    Mon 11 Dec 2023

Arthur, Antony and Indiana, with technician support from Thomas P and Hari, all from Y5 Bronte, gave a moving presentation in collective worship today. They were outlining the long history of conflict in Israel and Palestine, and the current war in Gaza.

The pupils had researched and written the presentation themselves. Tomorrow, the children are invited to wear white for Peace. This can be as simple as wearing a white hair accessory or they can dress head to toe in white, if they prefer! The Y5 team are requesting donations of money to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) which translates to 'Doctors without Borders'. We will have buckets on the gates on the 12th December, or you can donate on line: https://www.justgiving.com/page/chingford-cofe-primary-school-1701873416774

This initiative led by Arthur, Anthony and Indiana is driven by wanting to help the people affected by the war in Gaza and praying for peace around the world: Palestine, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Mali, Yemen, Turkey, Western Sahara, Congo, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan to name some. This initiative links to Articles 38 and 39 (Governments must protect and care for children affected by war and victims of war must receive special support to help them recover their health, dignity and social life) under the convention of children’s rights.

  • Civil Carol Concert

    Thu 07 Dec 2023

It was a wonderful turn out in our Parish church of St Peter's and St Paul's Chingford, on Thursday evening, for the Mayor's Civil Carol Concert! Our junior choir were delighted to be invited to sing along with other school choirs and community choirs and listen to a range of instrumental pieces. The mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Roy Berg, is himself an ex-pupil of our school. This made the event even more special! (Article 31: leisure, play and culture)

  • Superwriters!

    Wed 06 Dec 2023

Super Writers’ assembly: The Super Writer awards are nominated each term for the most improved girl and boy in each class. Anyone can win the award as EVERYONE (however good) can improve. You can win the award several times over, as long as you are continuing to improve!

In the award winner’s assembly, Ms Lampard explained to the children that there are two jobs to do when you are writing at school. The first job is the author - the ideas person who has to get the story/facts told. The second job is to be an editor - to go back through it and correct spellings, vocabulary choices, the organisation of ideas, the presentation and punctuation. In the adult world these are two distinct jobs - author and editor and are usually done by two separate people. At school we ask children to do both jobs and often it is the editing job that is hard after children have invested time, energy and their emotions into their writing to then pick it apart and try to improve it further. It was lovely that so many parents/carers of the winners could attend the assembly to see the children receive their medals and hear their citations. (Article 28, the right to an education and Article 29: goals of education.)

  • Rights Respecting Councillors visit the Houses of Parliament

    Mon 04 Dec 2023

Eighteen members of the Rights Respecting School Council visited the Palace of Westminster today where they were given a guided tour taking in the House of Commons, the House of Lords and Westminster Hall.

In addition, the children took part in a debating workshop helping them to understand more about how the democratic process works.

Local MP, the Rt Hon. Sir Iain Duncan Smith, joined in with the workshop session taking time to answer questions about his life in Parliament.

Year 4 councillor, Alfie, was particularly pleased about meeting Chingford's MP when he found out that he is supporting efforts to help Ralph Tatham, a 3 year-old toddler from Chingford whose family are seeking urgent support for a serious medical condition he is struggling with. Alfie commented, "My brother is helping to raise awareness about Ralph's situation. At the recent school Christmas Fair he managed to raise quite a bit of money to help the campaign to support Ralph."

Alfie added, "It's good to know that someone as important as Sir Iain Duncan Smith is supporting the cause."

Year 6 councillor, Emma, really enjoyed the workshop session. "Everyone got to share their views on a debate about meat-free dinners at school," she commented, adding, "it was especially good to listen to different opinions and views of our councillors and the way they articulated them."

Ana from Year 3 was very impressed by the beauty of the building saying, “I found out that some parts of Westminster Hall are over 900 years old which blows my mind!"

This was the second Rights Respecting School Council visit this term following on from November's trip to New City Hall, home of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. Next term the councillors will be visiting Walthamstow Town Hall to meet the  borough's mayor and find out how Waltham Forest is governed.
