  • Mini World Cup

    Thu 30 Jun 2022

With a nod to the impending Women's UEFA Euros and Men's World Cup finals in Qatar in November, for the past 3 weeks nearly one hundred boys and girls from Years 4,5 & 6 have been battling it out in a 9 a-side mini World Cup football tournament held at lunchtimes.

Tournament organiser, Liam from Year 6, has written the following overview of the tournament:

The early stages of the tournament saw 10 teams covering all the continents of the world, placed in two groups. Group A consisted of Italy, Ukraine, Japan, Argentina and Brazil. Group B consisted of France, New Zealand, Canada, Uganda and England.

Italy and France both topped their respective groups with both Ukraine and New Zealand edging a second place finish. Early tournament favourites from Group B, Canada, surprisingly failed to qualify besides having some of the school's finest players.

The stage was now set for two tense semi-final matches. Ukraine were pitched against a formidable France led by the boys' school U11's team vice captain, Teddy, whilst outsiders New Zealand, were paired with the mentally strong Italians who featured top girl player, Taya.

France easily breezed past Ukraine 2-0 in the first semi-final but Italy almost came unstuck against a stubborn Kiwi team who took the Italians to a gripping penalty shoot-out. Fortunately for Italy, Year 6 hotshot, Micah, converted the winning penalty firing his shot low into the bottom right corner of the onion sack!

With nearly 250 pupils and staff watching, the final took place on a rain battered pitch. Following a tense, goalless first half, the game came alive in the second period when the Italian striker, Micah, opened the scoring with a goal that took a wicked deflection off the French keeper, Oliver.

However, within a minute the French team levelled when Year 5 pupil, Sebastian, struck the back of the Italian net with a thumping shot from the edge of the 6 yard box.

At the final whistle there was nothing to separate the two teams so the outcome could only be decided by the feared penalty shoot-out. After goal after goal and miss after miss, the pressure weighed heavily on the shoulders of Year 4 pupil, Cody, who stepped up to the spot firing his unreachable penalty into the top corner of the net. France were champions of the world, well at least the school!

  • Parents' Association Camp

    Mon 27 Jun 2022

Once again the PA's weekend camp on the Junior school field proved a great success and included a special visit from a real life Harry the Hedgehog (the school's mascot). Year 5 pupil, Lola, who is pictured with Harry, commented, 'When my parents first heard a noise coming from out of the bushes they thought it might be a rat but were delighted to discover it was a hedgehog. They woke up me and my brother to come and meet the cute little thing. It made our day!'

  • Waltham Forest Commonwealth Games Day

    Fri 24 Jun 2022

Inspired by the upcoming Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’, Year 2 and 3 children from schools across the borough were invited to attend the Waltham Forest Commonwealth Games Day on Thursday. 30 of our Year 3 pupils attended this celebratory festival of sport, held at the Peter May Centre, and were able to participate in a range of sporting activities. This event was made even more special by the fact that Year 5 and 6 pupils, from a number of schools, led every one of the activities! 24 of our Year 5 pupils led sessions in archery, rugby, seated volleyball and lacrosse demonstrating fantastic teaching and leadership skills, inspiring younger pupils. It was a huge event, with 550 pupils attending in total! Thank you to Shona Gordon for organising such an amazing event.

  • Art Careers Event Week

    Thu 16 Jun 2022

With temperatures outside soaring, pupils at Chingford C of E took time out from their normal routine this week to indulge themselves in artistic pursuits including street art, architectural design, puppet making, movie animation, graphic design and makeup / special effects.

To help them on their way, the pupils met up with a number of local artists during the week who either talked to the children in person or online about the careers as well as helping them with their art work.

Year 6 pupil Liam. who was part of a zoom meeting with a make up artist, was excited to take some scary photographs. 'The guy who talked to us has done make-up and prosthetics for tv and movies.' he declared excitedly.

Year 5 pupil, Jah Kai, was just as enthusiastic commenting, 'I really enjoyed working with the street artist decorating the outside classroom wall with graffiti. I learnt about a guy called Banksy who makes millions doing it.'

A big thank you to Miss Greenberg who organised the event.
