Mothering Sunday celebrations
Fri 28 Mar 2025History of Mothering Sunday
Held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, it was a originally a day to honour and give thanks to the Virgin Mary, also known as Mother Mary. Such celebrations required people to visit their 'mother' church - the main church or cathedral in a family's area.We were delighted to invite parents/carers of Reception children to join their child having a cooked breakfast together at the juniors before beginning their school day. Thank you to all the grown-ups, Mums, Nans, Dad's who were able to come.

Y5 pupils bring home GOLD!
Mon 24 Mar 2025Chingford CofE attended a swimming competition in the form of a Panathlon led swimming challenge at the London Aquatics centre on Monday 24th March.
6 children were selected to take part in the event, having to complete an array of different swimming based challenges to score points for their school. These challenges gave the children the chance to showcase their love for swimming within a safe, friendly and fun environment.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the Treasure Hunt Challenge which involved them gathering different floating and sinking objects and returning back to their teams raft. They also loved racing against other children in the Ferry Travel Challenge using a float to travel from one side of the pool to the other as quick as possible.A big thank you to the aqua leaders and volunteers from Panathlon who helped support our children within the water and made the event an enjoyable experience. We look forward to the next one!

Superwriters!
Fri 21 Mar 2025Super Writers’ assembly: The Super Writer awards are nominated each term for the most improved girl and boy in each class. Anyone can win the award as EVERYONE (however good) can improve. You can win the award several times over, as long as you are continuing to improve!
In the award winner’s assembly, I was explaining to the children that there are two jobs to do when you are writing at school. The first job is the author - the ideas person who has to get the story/facts told. The second job is to be an editor - to go back through it and correct spellings, vocabulary choices, the organisation of ideas, the presentation and punctuation. In the adult world these are two distinct jobs - author and editor and are usually done by two separate people. At school we ask children to do both jobs and often it is the editing job that is hard after children have invested time, energy and their emotions into their writing to then pick it apart and try to improve it further.
All the winners of the most improved writer awards have been working so hard on improving their work. The winners this time are:Shakespeare

Rights Respecting Council presentation
Wed 12 Mar 2025On Tuesday the 11th March, we were fortunate to host Ms Machnicki, Assistant Principal of Chingford Foundation School and a selection of year 7’s and 8’s to our school.
Our Rights Respecting School Council gave a presentation detailing what it is like to be a Gold School. All our council members spoke clearly and confidently about various qualities that make a ‘Gold’ school. Our pupils also asked the year 7’s and 8’s what they might like to do at the start of their Rights Respecting journey as well as finding out what life is like in secondary school.
We are helping Chingford Foundation School as they begin their journey to becoming a ‘Right Respecting School’.

Happy World Book Day!
Thu 06 Mar 2025We have had a fun-packed celebration of books across the school today with a range of events and activities taking place.
Children have read and created their own comic strips; told stories; participated in online quizzes and live writing lessons; enjoyed a fantastic performance by Michael Rosen; debated who should be named the ‘ultimate book character’; explored poetry and non-fiction texts; listened to stories and created their own book-related artwork.
This afternoon, all children in Years 3-6 went outside to find a ‘reading buddy’ and shared a book of their choice with one another.
We did all of this whilst dressed as book characters! There was an impressive amount of effort and creativity that had been put into the creation of costumes today and we were able to share and celebrate this across the both sites with an online assembly.

Ash Wednesday
Wed 05 Mar 2025Ash Wednesday is a holy day of reflection and repentance in the Christian faith. Believers observe the day by fasting and receiving ashes in the shape of a cross on their forehead. It also marks the beginning of Lent.
Year 5 were invited by Mother Marilyn to visit the church and learn about Ash Wednesday. Mother taught the children the meaning of, penitence, how the church produces the ash and encouraged the children to explore the changes in the decoration of the church. Finally, she offered the children and adults a blessing in the form of an ash cross on the forehead.
