The Apprentice Star goes back to School
Tue 08 May 2012Fresh from being fired by Lord Sugar in the hit tv series 'The Apprentice', contestant Michael Copp recently found time to visit the school to talk to the children about his time on the show and how he has overcome his difficulties with dyslexia.
Michael answered a series of questions from the children revealing how much he respects Lord Sugar and that behind the scenes he is actually good friends with the other contestants.
Michael was signed up for the show following an on line application and a number of gruelling interviews. He was ecstatic when told he had been chosen to appear in the series which he has watched for years. Although eliminated early on, Michael is enjoying the remaining episodes but was tight lipped about the outcomes of some of the pre-recorded shows that have yet to hit the screens.
The Apprentice star urged children struggling with dyslexia to not let the disability prevent them from fulfilling their goals. Quoting his own experiences at school, Michael encouraged the children to persevere with their work and not to get too down even if they think they are falling behind their classmates. "Work hard", he advised, "and you'll be amazed at what you can achieve."
The young businessman who owns a kitchen furniture factory looks set for a bright future even though he faced those daunting words from Lord Sugar, "You're fired!"

Lifeguards Teach Beach Safety
Tue 27 Mar 2012Two lifeguards from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute have visited the school to talk to the children about beach safety. Children from towns and cities are most at risk of getting into difficulty along our coastline so the RNLI are targetting schools in these areas with a programme designed to acquaint children with the dangers associated with a day at the seaside. The school's Junior Accident Prevention Officer, Eleni, described the sessions as "interesting" adding, " We learnt about things such as the meaning of flags, how to avoid getting sun burn and how to react if you're caught in a rip tide."
The lifeguards also brought along with them their truck which they use to patrol the beach.

Orient Stars Meet 6B
Mon 27 Feb 2012Pupils from Class 6B recently spent an afternoon with Orient stars Kevin Lisbie and Matt Spring as part of the local club's 'Adopt a Player' scheme. Matt, who visited us earlier in the school year, and Kevin, who once scored a hat trick against Liverpool, spent time having a kick-about with the pupils as well as finding time to answer questions and sign autographs. The club also provided the school with 25 pairs of tickets for the home game against Walsall. Teacher Julie Roberts praised the players saying, "Nothing was too much for them. They seemed to enjoy the kick-about as much as the kids!"
Year 6 student, Lewis, was just as impressed describing Matt and Kevin as '"wicked!"
The children who received the match tickets for the game against Walsall all said they had a great time and were proud that the the two players, along with Jonathan Tehoue, who visited us earlier in the year, all featured in the game.
Once again, a big thank you to Howard Gould, the O's Development Coach, for organising the visit.

Pupils Celebrate Christmas at no.10
Mon 12 Dec 2011Four lucky Chingford C of E Junior School pupils were chosen to represent the school at a Christmas party held at 10 Downing Street on Monday 12th December. Year 5 pupils Frankie and Jade together with Year 6 pupils Drew and Selen, were invited to attend the party by the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media & Sport, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, in recognition of the school's commitment to sport. Only 10 schools from all over the country were invited to the prestigious event.
The Christmas party was organised on behalf of the Youth Sports Trust which is supported by the school. Waltham Forest School Games organiser, Shona Gordon, recommended Chingford C of E Junior school, in recognition of its participation and success in the sporting arena over many years.
The children enjoyed numerous activities including meeting Santa, feeding real life reindeers on the lawn of No.10 and being entertained by a DJ, carol singers and a host of princesses, elves and other seasonal characters. They also got to partake in a number of art and craft activities as well as competitions.
Other sporting superstars helping to make the party go with a swing were Mark Foster, amongst the most successful British swimmers of all-time, and Jason Gardener, one of the UK's greatest ever sprinters.
Also in attendance were Olympic and Paralympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville.
Unfortunately, Prime Minister, David Cameron, who had planned to be at the party, had to pull out at the last minute due to having to speak in the House of Commons about the current crisis affecting the Euro Zone. Nevertheless, the PM, made sure the children were not too disappointed by his absence by providing a goodie bag for each child including presents and personally signed Christmas cards from himself and his wife.
Headteacher, Mrs Tessa Darlow, who accompanied the children on the trip to Downing Street, described the day as a 'once in a life time opportunity'. She went on to add that she was 'extremely proud and honoured that the school had been invited to such a wonderful event and only wished more of her pupils could have shared in the unique experience.'

To celebrate the occasion a non-uniform day was held with the proceeds of a collection being passed onto the 'Sight Savers' charity who support visually impaired people in the developing world.
Charlie and Matt took part in a Q&A session with pupils during a special afternoon assembly and then found time to have a kick about with some bindfolded Year 6 footballers who were experiencing the challenge of playing one of the sports that will feature in the 2012 Paralympics.
