Bancroft Prep Debating Challenge
Thu 17 Nov 2022Six intrepid Year 6 pupils - Bethany, Melody, Eden, Molly, Thomas and Toby - represented the school in the inaugural Bancroft Prep Debating Challenge today.
Split into two teams, the children debated 3 motions - ‘This house believes that cars should be taken off the roads’, ‘This house believes we should become a meat-free country’ and ‘This house believes 10 year-old children should be given the right to vote’.
The teams were asked to either support or oppose the motions regardless of their own beliefs. Melody, for instance, found herself defending meat eating despite being a staunch vegetarian! Each child was given 2 minutes to present their argument in a debate against another school with an adult judge deciding which team won the debate overall.
In between each debate the teams were given a short amount of time to formularise their arguments.
Both teams lost their first round debates but with growing confidence they were able to chalk up three wins between them in the remaining four contests.
The school is very proud of the pupils’ performance against very stiff opponents which not only included teams from Bancroft Prep but other local schools namely Avon House, Forest, Snaresbrook, Wells Primary and St Aubyn’s.

Tue 15 Nov 2022Some of our Y6 pupils recently competed in the Sportshall Athletics event at the Peter May Centre. Millie from 6 Darwin class thoroughly enjoyed participating saying, "I really liked competing in the relay race which we won. Another event I enjoyed was the 'Speed Bounce' where you had to bounce over a pyramid-shaped object as many times as you could in 20 seconds."

Remembrance Day
Fri 11 Nov 2022On Friday 11th November the school remembered those who have given their lives serving our country in the armed forces.
The day started with an online assembly to all classes in Key stages 1 & 2 led by Ms Lampard which focussed on the importance of remembrance.
This was followed by a two-minute silence across both sites and then by a visit from a Royal Marine to Year 6 who spoke about his experiences and the history behind 'Poppy Day' as it is sometimes called. One lucky Year 6 student even got to dress up in a military uniform.
In the afternoon the same group of Year 6 students took part in a service held at Chingford Mount Cemetery where we laid a poppy wreath on the Cross of Sacrifice. The children also got to visit some of the graves of service men who lost their lives in The Great War.
Throughout the day children across the school were engaged in numerous Remembrance related activities including making poppies and poppy wreaths and learning about the futility and tragedy of war.

School Mascot's Mystery family member visits C of E
Thu 03 Nov 2022Mystery surrounds the sighting of a tiny hedgehog on the school grounds today. Rumours are flying around the playground that it could be one of the school mascot's own children! Other pupils suggest it could be a young relative who has come to stay with him.
Year 6 pupil, Toby, who first spotted the beautiful creature, thinks it could well be a younger brother or sister. "There's a definite likeness to Harry. And Harry's not that old so it's quite possible."
Paul, also from Year 6, has different ideas, "I think the baby hedgehog has come to visit Harry for Christmas. I'm sure I saw a small suitcase by the climbing wall the other day."
Harry himself is no stranger to travelling - before the pandemic he would regularly travel the world taking in such far-flung places as, Peru, Malaysia, Moscow, Vietnam and Lapland!
What do you think about the mystery visitor?

Class Assemblies Resume
Thu 03 Nov 2022Key Stage 2 pupils witnessed their first class-led assembly this week since before the Covid-19 lock down.
Class assemblies have always been a part of our collective worship / assembly programme and have been sorely missed.
A large gathering of parents, carers, grandparents and siblings saw our Year 6 Pankhurst class share their learning experiences this term which included presentations on Black History Month, Emmeline Pankhurst and the Suffragette Movement, the history of the Kingdom of Benin and the Year 6 study book, 'Storm Breaker', written by Anthony Horowitz,
Esme, who played the role of Emmeline Pankhurst, greatly enjoyed the experience saying, "I was quite nervous at first but once I started talking, I was fine. I think my last class assembly took place when I was in Year 3!"
Jamie, who started the assembly with a liturgical greeting, was also nervous but said being involved gave him 'a bit of a buzz'. "It was great that my nan came along to see me," he added.

Wed 02 Nov 2022Yesterday a KS2 cross country run event took place at the Juniors involving children who had qualified from their class list of top runners.
One of the competitors, Chloe, from Year 6 commented, " It was a well-structured course around the school field and playground. I really enjoyed it!"
Ivy, a fellow Year 6 pupil who acted as a marshal, added, "It was great to see how the children who were spectating encouraged the athletes to keep on going despite their exhaustion."

Year 3 pupil, Ralph, whose father attended the Stay and Read morning, was particularly enthusiastic about the event saying, " My mum usually comes into school so it was really brilliant to spend time with my dad here."
Fellow Year 3 pupil, Francesca, whose grandad came along, commented, "It was good for my grandad to come to school to read with me as he can see how well I'm doing."
