School involved in the launch of new keeping children safe initiative
Wed 09 Jun 2021A group of Year 4 pupils were filmed and interviewed today by BBC Local News marking the launch of 'Clever Never Goes', a new initiative designed to help keep children safe. The session was led by PC Karen Killick from Chingford Police station and was attended by Waltham Forest police chief, Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Tucker.
Eden, who was interviewed by the BBC reporter, described feeling 'nervous but excited' when she was told the reporter wanted to speak to her. She added, "It was a great experience and I learned a great deal about keeping safe. I was thrilled to know I would be appearing on the television for the first time in my life."
Ivy and Isla both enjoyed the presentation and were both surprised to learn that it is very risky even going off somewhere with people you might know reasonably well without the permission of a parent or carer.
Molly enjoyed meeting the Waltham Forest police chief. She was particularly impressed that as a young officer he had once arrested 66 people in one month!
BBC will be airing footage of the session on their Local News programme today at 1.30pm and 6.30pm

Farms Not Factories! Pupil calls for responsibly sourced practises to food production
Tue 11 May 2021Year 6 pupil, Caspar, presented a challenging PowerPoint assembly yesterday to KS1 & KS2 pupils concerning responsibly sourced foods. Caspar sensitively described to the children some details about factory farming and other inhumane methods of livestock rearing.
Caspar is raising money for the charity, 'Farms Not Factories' and is receiving donations via the school offices. So far he has raised nearly £115!
Caspar commented, 'Animals have beating hearts and emotions just like humans so we should treat them with the upmost care when raising them for food on our plates. I am a meat eater myself but don't want to see animals unduly suffer.'
Caspar is encouraged by the school's 'Meat Free Monday' initiative but is planning to write to Waltham Forest's Catering Service to investigate if their food sourcing is of the highest standard. He has also put up a display near the Junior site sensory room telling of his concerns and desire to bring about change to the world.
Caspar has set up an online petition on Change.org. If you would like to support his cause got to :

What an amazing universe we live in!
Fri 30 Apr 2021Year 5 have been studying 'Space & Beyond' as part of their science programme this term. This week they looked at the solar system and considered the immense distances that separate the planets from each other. The topic stimulated lots of big questions such as will humanity ever traverse interstellar space and, of course, does intelligent life inhabit other worlds?
As part of their work the children were involved in making a scale model of the solar system. Jake, a member of 5 Bronte, described the vast distance between Neptune and the Sun as 'mind blowing!'
Liam, also from 5 Bronte, composed a mnemonic to help him learn the order of the planets. He came up with, 'My Velociraptor Entertains My Jolly Smiling Uncle Neil!'.
Edward from 5 Hawking was amazed to discover that the planets with the biggest diameters spun more quickly. For instance, a day on Earth is 24 hours but on Jupiter a day is only 9.8 Earth hours.
Classmate, Cass, added, "I was shocked to learn that even though Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun it is not the hottest. In actual fact, Venus is the hottest.'
Skye, also from Hawking class, was amazed at the vast distances between stars and planets, "I learnt that it takes light over 8 minutes to reach the Earth from the sun even though light travels at 186,000
miles per second!"

Easter Box Project
Tue 30 Mar 2021Following on from their successful Christmas Box Project, the Red Balloon Foundation have continued to support the teaching of RE in the school by supplying our Year 2 - Year 6 classes with an Easter Box containing resources related to the events of Holy Week. The imaginative resources are supported by a PowerPoint presentation that helps teachers and pupils navigate their way through the story from the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem to his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Year 4 teacher, Mrs Brand, enthused about the Easter Box Project commenting, " The Easter box materials have really brought the telling of the Easter story to life. The children thoroughly enjoyed Luke and Lizzy's presentation which has really helped develop their understanding of the significance of Easter to Christians."
