Pupils Celebrate Christmas at no.10
Mon 12 Dec 2011Four lucky Chingford C of E Junior School pupils were chosen to represent the school at a Christmas party held at 10 Downing Street on Monday 12th December. Year 5 pupils Frankie and Jade together with Year 6 pupils Drew and Selen, were invited to attend the party by the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media & Sport, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, in recognition of the school's commitment to sport. Only 10 schools from all over the country were invited to the prestigious event.
The Christmas party was organised on behalf of the Youth Sports Trust which is supported by the school. Waltham Forest School Games organiser, Shona Gordon, recommended Chingford C of E Junior school, in recognition of its participation and success in the sporting arena over many years.
The children enjoyed numerous activities including meeting Santa, feeding real life reindeers on the lawn of No.10 and being entertained by a DJ, carol singers and a host of princesses, elves and other seasonal characters. They also got to partake in a number of art and craft activities as well as competitions.
Other sporting superstars helping to make the party go with a swing were Mark Foster, amongst the most successful British swimmers of all-time, and Jason Gardener, one of the UK's greatest ever sprinters.
Also in attendance were Olympic and Paralympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville.
Unfortunately, Prime Minister, David Cameron, who had planned to be at the party, had to pull out at the last minute due to having to speak in the House of Commons about the current crisis affecting the Euro Zone. Nevertheless, the PM, made sure the children were not too disappointed by his absence by providing a goodie bag for each child including presents and personally signed Christmas cards from himself and his wife.
Headteacher, Mrs Tessa Darlow, who accompanied the children on the trip to Downing Street, described the day as a 'once in a life time opportunity'. She went on to add that she was 'extremely proud and honoured that the school had been invited to such a wonderful event and only wished more of her pupils could have shared in the unique experience.'

Mathmaticians Take Up Challenge
Wed 30 Nov 2011During November over 30 Year 6 pupils took part in the Mathematics Association's 'Primary Maths Challenge'. Jack Page and Amy Thomson who took part in the challenge both agreed the test was extremely difficult. Jack described the test as 'the hardest thing he's done at school' while Amy said, 'Some parts of the test were harder than others.' Miss Roberts organises the test to give competent mathematicians a chance to stretch themselves to see how good they are. Here's an example of one of the questions. Why not try it yourself to see how clever your are?

Thu 24 Nov 2011It was a case of back to school recently for over 20 parents of Year 6 children who spent a morning working alongside their children during a maths lesson on division. The sessions organised by Year 6 teachers, Miss Roberts and Miss Bruford, focussed on modern teaching methods and proved an eye opener for many of the mums and dads present. Miss Roberts who leads maths across the school described the morning as, " Very productive! There was a lot of head scratching and nervous laughter at first but everyone enjoyed the experience and some mysteries about the teaching and learning of long division were unravelled." -
Orient Hero Meets 6R
Wed 16 Nov 2011Children from Miss Roberts' class recently had the privilege of spending an hour in the company of Leyton Orient striker, Jonathan Tehoue. Jonathan answered questions about his career and spent time signing autographs. Jonathan is best known for scoring a goal against Arsenal in last season's epic FA Cup encounter at Brisbane Road which saw the East London team earn a 1-1 draw.
Our roving reporter, Sofia Shelbourne, quizzed Jonathan about his footballing influences. Jonathan told Sophie that George Weah, who played for Chelsea and AC Miilan, was his favourite player.
Sophie also discovered that Jonathan started playing football at the age of 6. Within 10 years he was starring at the Le Havre academy in France! As a youngster he didn’t support Leyton Orient, he supported Barcelona and AC Milan.
Jonathan's visit was organised by Howard Gould who promotes the club's local community links. Leyton Orient also kindly provided the school with 25 pairs of tickets for a League One game against Exeter City - a game in which Jonathan scored as Orient won 3-0.
